Inside an AI Engineer Deployment.

A bootstrapped engineering team with a complex monorepo expected more throughput. They got it. But the more important result was that faster engineering exposed constraints elsewhere in the system.

When a ticket entered the queue, smpl read it, traced the relevant code paths in the monorepo, and surfaced the hidden complexity. Where human engineers would normally lose hours discovering that a ticket was underspecified, the system generated targeted pushback questions immediately. It performed early investigations, grounded the work in the actual state of the architecture, and created reusable context. The organization stopped relying entirely on senior engineers to decode the backlog.

Throughput, and what it surfaced.

For context, the broader engineering organization was averaging roughly 136 effort points per two-week sprint — about 68 points per week. In the first week of operation, smpl alone moved 67 effort points to ready-for-review. One system, in one week, roughly matched the entire organization's typical weekly engineering output.

More output is useful, but what happened next was more important. Leadership actually slowed the expansion of the system — not because it was underperforming, but because engineering was suddenly being squeezed on both sides. Downstream, QA couldn't keep up with the volume of work moving to ready-for-review. Upstream, product specification wasn't producing tickets defined deeply enough to keep pace with how fast the system could absorb them.

Once engineering drag was reduced, the bottleneck shifted to product specification and QA.
